I loved reading this post. I used to fly transatlantic a couple of times a year when Hanaa was younger. I loved the lawn sprinkler analogy. hehe. I used to stand up and call to attention everyone to give a "pre-apology" for anything that Hanaa might do during the flight that might bring discomfort to my fellow passengers. I would explain that she has severe autism and that I would do my very best to quell any tantrums, outbursts or inappropriate behaviors during the 10 and 1/2 hour flight. I used to be a flight attendant and I was pretty good at giving the safety demonstration with a touch of humour to make sure everyone paid attention. Very few times did I have to deal with any NT passengers who couldn't control their own behaviors ;) When I did run across a situation like that I usually turned into a fireball and woe to the person with the bad luck to be at the receiving end. I always looked so battered, bruised and disheveled at the end of those flights.

I remember a very similar flight FROM Dallas to Atlanta when Cooper was not quite 3. The biggest difference.... and we can all laugh now... is that Matt was sitting with my then 5 year old son and they were a row or two ahead of us. The man next to him kept up a litany of vitriol just spilling out about what a crappy mother I was and what a horrible, spoiled child Cooper was- Matt's reply was "you know, I blame the mother." Priceless. I ended that flight with a very sad, exhausted and confused little boy and a ripped shirt, bloody lip and broken brastrap. The flight attendant at one point actually put her finger in Coop's face and told him to control himself. I don't think I've ever felt that amount of animosity toward another human being in my life. Cooper (and Gray) were doing the very best they could to not explode into a million pieces. I hope your flight this time is a breeze. I hope Gray loves it.

Rhoni....you really should write a book! Your writing is so descriptive and a pleasure to read...sometimes I cry, sometimes I laugh, sometimes wish I had a solution, and I feel blessed (and a bit guilty) that Anthony's autism is relatively mild.....and EVERY time, I'm amazed by you and in awe of your perseverance and patience, candidness and ability to find some humor in your family's life. I wish I could see you and Berry in action! Wouldn't it be nice (sometimes) to just have to worry about what shade of red you want to paint your room?! Miss you!
